The 10th CFCO Meeting

Following approval at Monterrey, Mexico in 2003, the 10th Meeting of the Continental Front of Community Organizations (CFCO) is to take place from May 4-6 in Niterói, in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
The executive meeting of the CFCO, held on January 26 in Caracas, was attended by 500 leaders from every country in the continent, including 200 from Brazil.

The CFCO organizes these meetings every three years in order to discuss the continent’s political situation and the activities of community movements.
The 10th Meeting of the CFCO provides an important occasion for strengthening and expanding the community movement.
Discussion at the meeting will focus on the continent’s political and social situation paying particular attention to the advancement of popular, democratic forces, the specific situations as regards community struggles in each country, as well as the exchange of practical experience and a platform for collective struggles:
• The fight against imperialism, neoliberalism and the ALCA in the continent;
• A comparison between these struggles involving countries in the American continent and the search for new alternatives (ALBA, Latin-American and Caribbean integration)
• Experience of political struggles in these countries;
• The organization and enhancement of the CFCO.
The 10th Meeting will take place with the partial support of the Prefecture of Niterói, while the organizing body is CONAM – National Confederation of Inhabitants’ Associations under the auspices of the International Alliance of Inhabitants.
What is the CFCO – The Continental Front of Community Organizations
The CFCO was set up in 1987 on the initiative of the National Committee of the Popular Urban Movement of Mexico (CONAMUP), the General Confederation of Inhabitants of Peru (CGPP), the National Council of Inhabitants’ Associations of Bolivia (CONALJUVE), the Sandinist Defence Committee of Nicaragua (CDS), the Federations of Inhabitants’ Associations of the State of Rio di Janeiro (FAMERJ).
Every three years a CFCO meeting is organized with the participation of the national organizations of countries such as Cuba, (Revolutionary Defence Committee), Salvador, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Bolivia, Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, the United States, Canada, Haiti, Guatemala, Paraguay, Panama, Argentina and Brazil.
In Brazil CONAM and the Central Committee of People’s Movements are affiliated to the FCOC.
